From Call Centre to Tech Leader: A Journey into Business Analysis

At Corecom Technology Academy, we’re passionate about showing that tech is for everyone – regardless of background, experience, or qualifications.

In an inspiring episode of our Tech is for Everyone podcast, we sat down with Jamie Toyne, Founder and CEO of Herd Consulting, whose career path proves that success in tech doesn’t always follow a straight line.

From Call Centre to Business Analyst

Jamie’s journey into tech is far from linear. Like many, he experienced a series of role changes, growing curiosity, and a passion for solving problems, and eventually found his way into the world of business analysis.

“I didn’t know about the Oracle Bay System before my call centre role, but I was pretty IT-literate at the time. I initially trained 200 people on how to use this internal system and was then asked to travel around the country to train additional staff.” - Jamie Toyne

After senior management recognition, Jamie was welcomed to focus on process improvement work for the system, stating “Before I knew it, I was doing a type of business analysis role”.

His early career journey is a powerful reminder that you don’t need to start in tech to succeed in it. Many of today’s tech leaders began their careers elsewhere – and Jamie’s journey is a brilliant example of how transferable skills, resilience, and a willingness to learn can open new doors.

The Human Side of Business Analysis

An important thing to note about working in Business Analysis is that it isn’t just about understanding technology – it's about understanding people

While technology can often be predicted, it’s people – their motivations, communication styles, and resistance to change – that may present some of the biggest challenges. So that’s where Business Analysts shine.

Finding the right company that can help you develop those key soft skills for the sector such as emotional intelligence, stakeholder management, and clear communication skills can make all the difference – and what better place to start than with us!

“If you’re able to really position the positive impact in a good way, most people will see the rationale and the end goal that

you’re trying to achieve.” - Jamie Toyne

Debunking the Myths of Business Analysis

Transitioning into a Business Analysis role is often misunderstood.  Jamie shares the most common misconception – that you “must” have a degree to work in Business Analysis... which is far from the truth.

“For people who are considering going into Business Analysis, I just want to say you don’t need a degree to be a great business analyst. It’s not a prerequisite that’s needed. If you have a degree – brilliant. If you don’t have a degree – also brilliant.” - Jamie Toyne

Another common myth about working as a Business Analyst is the belief that you need to be brilliant with numbers.

“To be a great Business Analyst, you don’t need to be a brilliant mathematician. You can receive support, courses, mentors, and coaches for that. But the things that are more important is if you’re collaborative, curious, and can you communicate effectively.” - Jamie Toyne

At Corecom Technology Academy, we help you build those exact skills that make great Business Analysts – communication, curiosity, collaboration, and a deep understanding of how to connect technical teams with business goals.

With hands-on training, mentorship, and a structured framework, you'll gain the confidence and capability to thrive in the role... whether or not numbers are your strong suit!
