Our recent Alumni, Jaz, joined the Academy with limited technical experience, yet has quickly built a strong foundation in full‑stack engineering in just 12 weeks through an aptitude for continuous learning, career support, and hands‑on technical training.
Before joining the Academy, Jaz worked within the food industry with a placement year as a Technical Assistant prior, making his transition into full‑stack engineering even more impressive.
Jaz was recruited into our Academy following his strong aptitude for continuous development in tech, completing our comprehensive full-stack Engineering training, and has now been successfully deployed into the clients team.
We caught up with him to talk about his journey into tech, the skills he’s developed, and what the Academy experience has meant for his confidence and career direction.
Looking back, how would you describe your Academy learning experience overall?
The academy training was very challenging… but I mean that in the best way!
I was pleasantly surprised by how thorough and detailed the training was in such a short time. Everyone at Corecom Tech Academy are just lovely. They really care about us as individuals and consistently check in on how I’m doing both during the training and after, but also offering support or a quick chat if I needed it.
What new skills and strengths did you develop?
As someone with very little tech experience coming into the training, I can safely say that I learnt a whole lot!
In terms of technical skills, I learnt so much about software engineering, From zero, I became confident in JavaScript, react and various AWS apps, to the point where I’m able to create and host a live website through react and AWS.
I have also gained valuable soft skills in team-working and professional communication through our group projects. We would often face challenging problems in our projects and tasks, so this also tested (and improved!) my resilience and problem-solving skills.
In what ways did the Academy prepare you for working in a real tech environment?
What really stood out to me at the start of training was the thorough session we had about different project management methodologies – such as waterfall, scrum, kanban and more.
It wasn’t just theory either! In these training sessions, we completed practical activities to give us a firm understanding on why and how they work. Then, we put those approaches in practice during our group project.
By the time I was deployed with the client, I felt confident and not at all lost when it came to Agile working, which instantly made me comfortable and prepared.
