Today, we’re introducing Poppy‑Leigh, whose journey from Astrophysics graduate to Automated Testing is nothing short of inspiring. Read on for insights about her path into tech, her ambitions, and the support that has shaped her early tech career.
What’s your professional background and what motivated you to work in tech?
Corecom Tech Academy was the launch of my professional career in Tech. Before I got the opportunity to work here, I was a year out of University with an Astrophysics degree, post Covid-19, being greeted by the experience paradox everywhere I looked.
Whilst at University, I had to rely on a lot of analysis, coding, logic and problem-solving skills, which align oh-so perfectly with Automated Testing!
The process of dissecting complex issues, developing elegant solutions through code, and seeing those solutions come to life really stuck with me and this passion for analytical and technical challenges naturally led me to explore career paths where these skills are paramount.
What are your career aspirations in tech and why?
I often use the metaphor of a ‘knowledge tree’ to describe a part of me. It is ever-growing, ever-changing and never static. The roots of my aspirations are to always continue to learn, to find new experiences and new areas of expertise that will ultimately level-up my abilities.
The world of technology is just as fluid, always having to keep up with the newest demands, trying to be more efficient, trying to change the way the world works, and that is why my thirst for knowledge-growth and tech are so compatible!
What support have you received from the Academy team so far?
Corecom Tech Academy have been the pillars behind the scenes that keep me at peak performance for my client. On a Professional level, the Academy has gifted me with countless opportunities for development and growth, whether that’s through ‘Peer Learning’ sessions, making highly recognised qualifications available to you or even just getting to talk with the amazing Academy team about their own experiences!
But I can’t overlook the support they have also provided to me on a personal level. As an Autistic person fresh out of education, with no corporate or ‘real-world’ experience, Corecom Tech Academy taught me how to truly navigate a tech workforce. Their compassion and genuine care for people regardless of identities, backgrounds or abilities have made my future a hopeful one and my work-life a fulfilling one!
Following on, how prepared did you feel stepping into your first client project?
I arrived on the client’s team having used Python for most of my previous education. I have dabbled in C++, SQL, Fortran but never Java, and somehow in 6 weeks, Thomas was able to make me project ready! Starting a new role is always rocky and unnerving, but when you know you’ve get the tools and knowledge to carry you through, it makes it a load easier to start.

What new skills have you gained during your time in the Academy so far?
On the technical front, I’ve had the opportunity to rapidly acquire proficiency in new programming languages, advanced tooling systems, and specific software platforms directly relevant to our client projects. This continuous learning has been crucial, allowing me to adapt quickly to diverse client requirements and contribute effectively to the technical delivery of solutions.
However, my most significant area of growth has been in people management and leadership. Within a relatively short period, I stepped into a role that demanded a higher level of responsibility than initially anticipated. This rapid increase in expectations took a lot of versatility and without guidance from Corecom Tech Academy I may not have been able to excel the way I did.
How has the Academy created new tech opportunities for you?
The Academy has been pivotal in opening new opportunities for me within the tech industry, far beyond what I might have achieved independently. They have provided a structured pathway and dedicated resources to achieve highly sought-after industry certifications. For example, they were an integral part of me being able to gain my ISTQB Testing Qualification.
What are your future goals?
My current goal is to secure an ISTQB Automation Tester qualification, building on my foundation qualification and diving into the practices of Automation. I’m also exploring Data Migration and testing frameworks, as I’d really like to brush up on my python skills and see how I can apply them to new testing areas.
