In this interview, we sit down with Associate Quality Engineering Consultant, Jack Watt, to explore his professional background, motivations for pursuing a career in technology, and the impact our Academy training and support have had on his development.
What’s your professional background and what motivated you to work in tech?
I’m a Computer Science graduate from Queen’s University Belfast. Through my course, I developed a foundation in computing fundamentals, front and back-end development, API development and testing, and software testing, among other areas.
Corecom Tech Academy helped me upskill further in all-things Quality Engineering. I learned the ins and outs of automation frameworks like Selenium and BDD frameworks such as Cucumber. This allowed me to transfer the skills I gained during my Computer Science degree and software engineering experience into my current role on the client side. But before entering the tech world, I spent most of my adult life working in bars, pouring many a perfect pint of Guinness.

What are your tech career aspirations and why?
I’m currently working as an Automation Engineer for a Big 4 firm, specifically for a client in the Public Sector whose work impacts millions of people every year. I aspire to become a technical lead, and I’d love to lead a team of engineers while staying hands-on with code, whether that’s in automation or software engineering.
What support have you received from the Academy team so far?
The initial training was excellent. As a STEM graduate, I already had a solid understanding of programming fundamentals, but the areas I wasn’t familiar with were taught exceptionally well at Corecom Tech Academy. I’ve also always been able to refer back to my Technical Instructor, Thomas, for any additional support I needed. The entire training team has been incredibly supportive with any technical queries.

Following on, how prepared did you feel when transitioning into your first client project?
Coming from a start-up environment, consultancy felt like a breath of fresh air. In the start-up world, you end up being a jack of all trades and master of none, doing a bit of everything. Consultancy allowed me to specialise and focus on the areas I’m most passionate about.
From the outset, I knew I wanted to work in automation, and I was able to land a role in that space. Thanks to the skills I learned in the Academy, particularly in automation, I was able to step into my first client role with confidence and make a measurable impact from day one. Without the training and support I received, I don’t think the transition would have been half as smooth as it was.
What new technical and soft skills have you gained here, and how have they helped you grow?
On the technical side, I’ve significantly improved my skills in automation. On the soft skills front, I’ve been working on becoming more confident speaking in front of people. Corecom Tech Academy has given me opportunities to present at internal events, which has helped me step up on the client side and take on roles outside of project work that have further developed my communication skills.
How has the Academy opened new opportunities for you in the tech industry?
The Academy has been fantastic in terms of progression and certifications. They funded my ISTQB examination, and I’ve got additional certifications lined up that I’m currently studying for. Nothing has ever been too much for the team, and they’ve been incredibly supportive in helping me grow professionally.

What are your future plans and goals?
I prefer to stay grounded, take things as they come, and make the most of the opportunities in front of me. For now, I’m focused on making the most of my current role and seeing where it takes me.
