Inclusion in Tech Event (2024) -Corecom Tech Academy

This year’s International Women’s Day focused on creating a world where everyone feels valued and empowered. Our panel of inspiring speakers – Claire Malone, Dr. Maame Nikabs, Ashley Smith, and Daniel Clark-Bland – echoed this sentiment, sharing powerful insights and actionable advice applicable both in the workplace and beyond.

Inspiring a more inclusive Tech sector

The discussions covered a range of crucial topics, including:

  • Inclusive coding language: Ashley Smith suggested ways to make coding languages more inclusive and user-friendly, ensuring a wider range of people feel welcome to contribute to the tech world.
  • Building allyship in the workplace: Daniel Clark-Bland discussed the importance of taking an intersectional approach to allyship of women in tech. This involves recognising and understanding the unique challenges faced by women from diverse backgrounds.
  • Fostering an inclusive culture: Looking inward is key to building a truly inclusive work environment. Panelists discussed strategies for understanding your team’s needs and fostering a culture where everyone feels comfortable being themselves.
  • Inclusive practices: Simple steps, like ensuring everyone has the opportunity to contribute in meetings, can go a long way in creating a more inclusive space.

A Night of Inspiration and Action

We were also honoured to have Councillor Abigail Marshall Katung, the new Lord Mayor of Leeds, deliver an inspiring closing speech. Her words resonated deeply with the audience, further emphasising the importance of ongoing efforts towards inclusion.

This successful event wouldn’t have been possible without the co-hosting efforts of our sister company, Corecom Tech Academy. A massive thank you goes out as well to our ED&I Ambassadors and event hosts, Dominic Brown and Chloe Marshall.

Moving forward together

The insights and discussions from our IWD24 event provided valuable takeaways for everyone involved. By working together and implementing these actionable strategies, we can create a more inclusive tech industry that empowers all individuals to reach their full potential.

Corecom Tech Academy is committed to ongoing efforts that inspire inclusion and promote inclusive recruitment. Stay tuned for future events and initiatives, and reach out if we can help you to the same.
