How to identify and prevent burnout in the tech workplace
We’re strong believers that success in the tech industry is not just about skills and performance. It is also about people… and our recent internal ‘Wellbeing Day’ event was such an important reminder that looking after ourselves is key to thriving both in and out of work.
Between the breakout activities, group mindfulness talks, and a few (too many) snacks, our key theme for the morning session was ‘identifying and avoiding burnout’ (specifically in the Tech workplace).
But what exactly is burnout, how can you spot it early, and what can you do to avoid it? Let’s discuss…
What is Burnout?
Burnout is more than just being ‘tired’ after a long week. It’s the combination of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by prolonged stress or overwork.
According to Mind, burnout “can make you feel mentally, physically and emotionally drained” and unable to manage the demands of work life. It is often identified through three key signs:
Exhaustion: feeling drained and unable to recover, even with rest.
Cynicism or detachment: losing enthusiasm for your job or feeling disconnected from colleagues (or sometimes workplace goals).
Reduced performance: finding it difficult to concentrate or complete tasks that once felt manageable.
Recognising these signs early is essential. As Mind highlights, burnout can affect anyone – from junior professionals to senior team leaders – and taking steps to manage stress, seek support (for example from internal Mental Health First Aiders), and prioritise wellbeing can make a huge difference. And the good news? You can prevent it before it kicks in.
“By introducing some small measures to promote wellbeing, you are likely to increase staff loyalty and performance.”
5 Tips to Help You Avoid Burnout
1. Set Boundaries (… and Stick to Them)
It’s easy to fall into the trap of “just one more email” or “I’ll finish that project tonight.” But consistently blurring the line between work and personal life leads to exhaustion. Create clear work boundaries and stick to them. Log off on time, mute notifications, and protect your weekends. Rest is productive.
2. Prioritise Breaks and Downtime
Studies show regular short breaks improve focus, creativity, and overall wellbeing. Through our internal #Wellbeing channel, we share initiatives that create safe spaces and encourage everyone to prioritise their mental health.
By stepping away from the screen, going for a walk, stretching, or even catching up with a colleague, our team returns refreshed and more productive – which ultimately means better ideas, collaboration, and results for our clients.
3. Talk About How You Feel
It’s important to create an environment where everyone feels supported and heard. We have a dedicated Academy Ops & People team and Mental Health First Aiders on board encouraging open, honest conversations about mental health and wellbeing with our Associate Consultants.
Employers and employees should also openly discuss workloads to ensure responsibilities are manageable.
4. Celebrate Progress, Not Perfection
Tech professionals often set high standards for themselves, but perfectionism can be a fast track to burnout. Instead of chasing flawless results, celebrate progress and continuous learning.
Our team makes a conscious effort to recognise hard work, milestones, or spotlighting individual achievements on our internal (and public) channels. Why? Because acknowledging effort not only boosts team morale, but also reinforces a healthy, sustainable approach to growth and success.
5. Invest in Your Overall Wellbeing
Your mental and physical health are your greatest assets. Prioritise sleep, stay hydrated, eat well, and get moving. That can be anything from a gym session, yoga, or a quick walk on your lunch break. Mindfulness and relaxation techniques can also work wonders for managing stress.
Building a Healthier Workplace
Avoiding burnout isn’t just a personal responsibility - it’s a collective effort.
As a community, it’s important to prioritise building environments where people feel valued, supported, and empowered to take care of themselves. That means encouraging balance, celebrating wellbeing initiatives, and checking in with one another regularly.
Our Wellbeing Day reminded us that success isn’t about working harder, it’s about working smarter and healthier. This mindset carries through our Associate Consultants and Academy Team, meaning our clients can benefit from motivated, focused, and engaged professionals on every project.
