The client, a leading UK retail business, was embarking on a major cloud migration programme. A key priority was to modernise their data engineering capability, moving away from legacy ETL processes and adopting Snowflake as their core platform. They required a stable, long-term solution: data engineers who were both capable and committed to staying with the business.

“We’ve now got a solution to scale our teams efficiently, but keeping the flexibility and scalability needed to meet project demands. The people from Corecom Tech Academy have all been fantastic and are now growing to be key members of our teams.”

Client Testimonial

Situation

Historically, the client relied heavily on expensive contractors to fill data engineering roles. While this provided short-term capacity, the use of contractors meant knowledge was lost, delivery momentum suffered, and costs continued to rise. They needed a more sustainable model: a team with the right skills in data engineering and Snowflake, but crucially one that would stay and grow with the business, maintaining the required headcount at a reduced cost.

Challenge

The client needed to reduce its reliance on expensive contractors, while ensuring projects stayed on track. They faced a significant skills gap, lacking in-house data engineers with core engineering foundations and Snowflake expertise needed to drive cloud-based ETL development. In addition, the use of contractors meant that even when skilled people were brought in, they rarely stayed long enough to embed knowledge or build continuity.

Our Solution and Approach

Corecom Tech Academy worked with the client to design a cohort of Data Engineering Associate Consultants, tailored to their needs.

  • Recruitment: We sourced candidates through our bespoke process, selecting for general engineering aptitude, problem-solving skills, and motivation to develop in data roles.
  • Training: Associates completed an intensive training programme focused on core engineering skills and Snowflake, alongside wider modern data engineering practices including cloud-based ETL development, version control, and agile delivery.
  • Deployment: After training, the cohort was deployed into the client’s teams, providing immediate value while also reducing dependence on expensive contractors. Longer term these data engineers will join the client.

Let the results do the talking

Skilled Snowflake-Ready Team

The client gained a stable team of data engineers with the skills needed for their Snowflake migration.

Permanent In-House Expertise

Unlike contractors, our Associate Consultants will become a long-term part of the client’s workforce, embedding knowledge and providing continuity across projects.

Ongoing Efficiency and Growth

The approach significantly reduced costs, while ensuring delivery capability was retained and built upon year after year.
