Skills Bootcamp FAQs
For Individuals
What are Skills Bootcamps? Skills Bootcamps are free, flexible courses of up to 16 weeks, giving people the opportunity to build up sector-specific skills and fast-track to an interview with an employer. They are full funded via the Department for Education (DfE) and are free to learners.
How much does it cost? We have a limited supply of fully funded places on our bootcamps, so you don’t need to spend anything to join the course. Employers wanting to send their people on a course are part funded. Get in touch for more details.
Who do we teach? For all our bootcamps, we provide hands on technical training in a range of topics that are designed to prepare you for a role in tech. We also provide training and support to help you get employment, and will work with our clients and local employers to find you employment as quickly as possible.
How long are the courses? Courses range from a few weeks through to 10 weeks on a full time basis, or more if the course is part time. After the training completes there will be a period of time where we will aim to find you employment opportunities – this can be several more weeks, but ideally just another week or two.
Do I need prior experience? No previous experience is required. You can join our most technical programming courses without ever having written a line of code before. We do look for technical aptitude as the courses can be challenging, so we ask you to complete a short technical aptitude test as part of the application process.
Do I have to have a degree? No degree is required, and if you do have a degree it doesn’t have to be a STEM or CompSci degree.
Do I need my own laptop? No, and we don’t want having an expensive laptop to be a barrier to getting into tech! We’d prefer you use your own laptop if you have one, but we can supply a limited number of laptops for people not able to provide or use their own. The requirements of the laptop is approximately an Intel Core i5 processor or equivalent, with a minimum of 8GB RAM and ideally an SSD drive. Please get in touch if you’re not sure.
What sort of internet connection do I need? For remote video based sessions, you’ll need a reliable broadband connection. You may at times need to download large files / installations or share your screen with an instructor, so a 4G / 5G connection tethered from a phone is not normally suitable.
Is there an age limit? The bootcamp eligibility criteria is you need to be 19+. Otherwise, there is no age restriction.
Do I need to live in a specific area? Possibly, yes. Look at the Course Schedule where eligibility criteria is listed. Courses can be specific to certain cities or counties, but can also be nationwide. If a course isn’t listed for your area, you can still apply and we’ll let you know when a course is running that you are eligible for.
For Employers
Can I use Skills Bootcamps to upskill my staff? Yes. You can send your people on our Skills Bootcamps with the training 70% funded (90% for SMEs). Typically, a Skills Bootcamp would cost an Employer just a few hundred pounds per person to access the training. Employees still need to meet the eligibility criteria.
Can we hire people that have been through your Skills Bootcamp? Yes. Get in touch using the Contact Us link above and we’ll be in touch to talk to you about people we have available
Can we work with you to build a Skills Bootcamp to meet our needs? Yes. If you have specific needs that are either similar to an existing Skills Bootcamp we are running, or covering completely different skills / roles, we will be able to work with you to design and deliver a programme that meets your needs and is funded.
How else can we get involved? You can work with us to help us design training, provide practice interviews for people completing training, or provide mentorship or other support for people at any point in the process. These could be your own Employees or anyone else completing a Skills Bootcamp. Get in touch and we’ll discuss with you how you can help
